Dark-copper-skinned and not easily startled by the doors around her, Aun Tehaura kept the road-count outside Timaru for eleven years before the Meridian took an interest in her and her second count - the one she started keeping when something began calling at night from a plateau nobody walks. Now the door is here, pinned open in the hall, and so is she.
