Glass Shaft is the sixth bay of Assay Row's west wall, the Dark Tree Crystal Mine turned over to an obsidian seam warren. There is no boss here: the danger is the floor itself.
Overview
The shaft is a sprawling warren of small, close rooms cut through dark volcanic rock, guarded throughout by the mine's own obsidian golems, which already looked the part. The floor across the whole warren runs molten: a lattice of lava tiles covers essentially every walkable stretch, so simply standing still anywhere in the shaft costs health over time. There is no way to fight through it and leave clean; the only real defense is not lingering.
Eight seam sites are cut into the walls at intervals through the warren, each a workable formation of raw obsidian glass.
Inhabitants
- Blackglass Hewer - the shaft's guardian population, spread in numbers throughout the warren.
The floor's molten hazard deals fire damage to anyone standing in it and is not a creature - see Harvest below.
Harvest
Working a seam requires the Assay Pick, handed out by Glasswright Rin Kuroda when the bay opens. Using the pick on an Obsidian Seam formation has roughly a one-in-three chance per swing to break the seam loose entirely, yielding a shard of Raw Obsidian Glass; a broken seam leaves its site bare for a few minutes before a fresh seam grows back in the same spot. Rin asks for ten shards to complete the teaching.
Because the shaft's floor is molten essentially everywhere, working a seam means standing in the heat while swinging the pick - stepping back stops the damage, but stalls the mining. The seam itself does not fight back or summon anything; the floor is the only danger in the room.
Access
The entry portal, also named Glass Shaft, sits in the Assay Row alcove on the Drift Network's west wall and only opens for a character who has already been taught Amethyst by Slotwright Yusra Tannim at the previous bay. The exit portal inside the shaft, named Surface, leads back to the hub near Glasswright Rin Kuroda's stand. Rin is the craftsperson who runs the bench this bay unlocks: bring her ten shards of raw obsidian glass and she teaches Obsidian.
