Aun Tehaura the Drumspeaker is a Tumerok quest giver standing beside the pinned door to The Unanswered Rookery in the Drift Network hall's south wing, who hears the flock calling through it and can't stand the sound of it going unanswered.

Overview

Dark-copper-skinned and not easily startled by the doors around her, Aun Tehaura kept the road-count outside Timaru for eleven years until the Meridian took an interest in her and her second count - the one she started keeping when something began calling at night from a plateau nobody walks. Now the door is here, pinned open in the hall, and so is she.

Tallies

Aun Tehaura pays for the gold-shelled eggs the wayless flock keeps producing around the door. Bring her five and she pays out on the spot; the tally then resets and can be repeated every 20 hours. The eggs turn up when the flock is killed in The Unanswered Rookery, and Whetu the Unanswered always carries one, so a single kill of the boss goes a long way toward a full clutch. These are loose eggs the flock carries, not the fixed clutch ringing the Rookery Mound.

Dialogue

On first approaching her:

"You stopped at this one. Most people walk the aisle and never look at the doors."

On asking about the door and the task, the first time:

"I kept the road-count outside Timaru for eleven years. Then something began calling at night from a plateau nobody walks, and I started keeping a second count. The Meridian took an interest. Now the door is here, pinned open in this hall, and so am I. Stand close to it. You can hear them through it. They are calling for the rest of their flock, and gold-shelled eggs keep turning up where nothing should be nesting. Bring me five of the gold-shelled eggs. Let the drums answer something for once, and let me sleep."

Handing over an egg, before the fifth:

"One more into the count. The nest empties a little more each time."

Checking back with her before the fifth egg:

"Fewer eggs in the nest each time you bring me one. Keep going."

Handing over the fifth egg:

"Five clutches, five answers. The drums stop stuttering tonight. Take what I owe you."

Checking back with her once the tally is paid:

"Five eggs bought today's quiet. Come back when the clutch reforms and I will want more."
