Edgewright Kenji Ashida
RoleAssay Row craftsperson
LocationDrift Network (south wing, Assay Row)
QuestsOpen Cut

Edgewright Kenji Ashida is the Meridian edgewright who runs the third bench of Assay Row, teaching Tourmaline, the ten-slot weapon reroll.

Overview

Kenji stands at the bay 3 alcove of the Drift Network hall's Assay Row, arming anyone bound for the Open Cut and holding the tourmaline bench until they have earned what it teaches.

Quest

Kenji will not talk business until the previous craftsperson's teaching is complete: his bench stays closed until Grainwright Alys Fenn has taught you Prismatic. Once that is satisfied, approaching him hands over an Assay Pick and sets the task.

The task is to bring back 10 pieces of Raw Tourmaline, mined from the seams in Open Cut. Handing those over teaches Tourmaline and gives the working Tourmaline Hammer: applied to a weapon in a player's pack, it strips every tinker and special modifier the weapon carries and refills all ten of its slots at random (imbues and slayer mods survive). Nothing removed can be recovered and nothing about the result can be chosen; the hammer holds ten applications before it crumbles to dust.

The turn-in grants no experience or Trade Notes - the reward is the hammer itself. The teaching is a once-only, non-repeatable completion (the underlying quest flag allows exactly one solve); a second visit after completion gets only an acknowledgement, no second pick or hammer.

Dialogue

Before the previous bay's teaching is complete:

"The Open Cut will not open for you yet, so there is no sense in my arming you for it. Grainwright Alys Fenn keeps the first bench on this Row. Finish what she sets you and the cut will let you through; come back to me then."

Once it is, offering the task:

"Weapons here. Tourmaline strips a blade back and fills it again at random, which is cheaper than it sounds and worse than you would like. I will teach you the whole of it before you spend anything."
"Take that pick through the Open Cut. It is a surface dig, daylight the whole way down, but do not mistake that for empty - work the seams, not the wildlife. Bring me ten pieces of raw tourmaline and I will show you what a ten-slot reroll actually costs."

Turning in fewer than ten pieces:

"That is not ten. Get back to the cut and finish the count before you bring it to my bench."

Turning in ten or more:

"Ten pieces, banded green through pink the whole way. That is enough to show you what the hammer does. Watch your fingers."

After the teaching is complete:

"You have the pick and you have the whole of tourmaline from me. There is nothing left on this bench for you."
