Breathing Door is a descent-and-purge dungeon opening off the south wing of the Drift Network hall, built for characters of roughly level 52 and up. It inhales and exhales on a cycle the gaugers chart like weather, and on the exhale it leaks in pulses, each worse than the last.
Overview
The door opens onto a high ledge, not a corridor: the player looks down into a wide pit sunk three tiers below. Getting to the fight is a climb down through populated tiers - corner platforms, then galleries overlooking the pit, then a lower hall - rather than a hold at a fixed line. Every tier has its own share of the drift-touched brood pulsing steadily out of the door, so the descent itself is a running fight before the pit is even reached.
At the bottom, the pit floor is ringed by ten doorways feeding straight onto it, and at its centre stands the Spiracle Node: a sac of grey chitin set into the floor, swelling and settling with every breath. Working it is what starts the real fight - the player is the one who provokes what comes next, not someone waiting for it to arrive.
The Spiracle Node
Pressing the node draws three breaths, each one letting a fresh brood through the pit's doors, and only the fourth pull brings up Matron of the Long Breath herself:
| Pull | What comes through |
|---|---|
| First | Drift-Touched Olthoi Drones, through the west doors |
| Second | Drift-Touched Olthoi Soldiers, through the east doors |
| Third | A mixed brood, through the north and south doors |
| Fourth | Matron of the Long Breath, at the pit's centre |
Working the node while a wave is still alive does nothing further; working it against a wave that is only half-cleared lets the next wave's leading edge through early. Both are read as the arena punishing an impatient pull, not as a bug.
Inhabitants
The descent above the pit runs a steady population of its own drift-touched brood - Drift-Touched Olthoi Drones at the higher tiers, Drift-Touched Olthoi Soldiers lower down - independent of whatever the Spiracle Node is doing in the pit below. Both are unarmed, mute, and drift-touched gold, the same brood as the boss below them, just thinner and further from the source.
Boss
Matron of the Long Breath does not rise until the node has been worked three times; she stands at the pit's centre once she does, flanked by soldiers still coming through her own breach. Like the rest of her brood she never speaks - her only voice is the endless brood breathing around her.
Access
The entrance is a portal in the south-wing alcove of the Drift Network hall, standing beside Vent-Warden Callum Dreese. It requires a minimum character level of 40 to step through, though the descent itself is built for level 52 and up. A "Surface" portal near the entry ledge lets a player bail out without running the full descent, and a second "Surface" portal at the pit's edge is the way out once the Matron falls.
Callum Dreese sends contractors down to quiet the Matron, plainly warning that the fight is one you start on purpose rather than one that comes looking for you. He pays out on a repeatable cadence with a one-time reward piece the first time you finish it. See Vent-Warden Callum Dreese for the full job and Meridian reward pieces for the reward.
