A shard of drift-glass that will not hold one color. Held up to the light it shows every edge a weapon might carry, and none of them for long - and used on the right weapon, it settles into exactly one.
What it does
Use the stone on an untinkered melee weapon, missile launcher, or caster sitting in your pack, and confirm the prompt (the effect is permanent, so it asks first). The stone reads what the weapon already bites with and sets a matching rending into it - a bonus tied to whichever damage type the weapon is strongest in - then adds between one and five strokes of flat extra damage besides, the same way an ordinary damage tinker would.
The rending it settles on depends on what the weapon already carries:
- A weapon with more than one physical damage type takes the sharper of the two.
- An elemental alignment always wins out over a plain physical one.
- A missile launcher with no elemental alignment defaults to a piercing rending.
- A caster with no elemental alignment gets a critical-strike edge instead of a rending, and is permanently locked out of ever being attuned to an element afterward.
The stone refuses a weapon that has already been tinkered, or one that already carries an imbued effect - it only works on a clean weapon, once. It also refuses anything that is not a melee weapon, missile launcher, or caster: armor, clothing, and jewelry are turned away outright.
Whatever weapon it touches can never be tinkered again afterward - the rending and the extra damage are the last work that weapon will ever take.
Pairing with the Attuned Drift Prisms
Used on a caster whose orb has already been aligned to an element by an Attuned Drift Prism, the stone's rending follows that alignment - a fire-aligned orb gets a fire rending, and so on. An unaligned orb still gets the critical-strike fallback and its permanent lock.
Notes
The stone itself cannot be sold to a vendor.
