Relief-Bearer Ysanne Loret is the Meridian warden posted at Held Door, holding the roster of the survey crew that went missing there in the spring.

Overview

Ysanne has not filed the survey crew's case as closed, even though the wing's official position is that they are dead and their equipment is recoverable. She sends contractors through the door to relieve Line-Captain Isaure Vellamy and recover the crew's issue - and, though she does not know it, whatever waits beyond her. She wears a light chainmail field kit rather than the heavier plate the wing's line troops carry, marking her as a relief-bearer rather than a soldier.

The job

Ysanne's job is repeatable: once turned in, it becomes available again after the door's standard cadence of twenty hours, and each completion pays 5 trade notes (1,250,000 pyreals) on top of its experience award. The first time it is completed, she additionally hands over a one-time reward piece (see Meridian reward pieces) that is never given out again to the same contractor.

Dialogue

Greeting Ysanne opens with her read on the job:

"Someone holds that door so it cannot walk. Relieve the Line-Captain - and whatever waits on the other shoulder - then come back and be counted."

Taking the job, she states the Meridian's official framing:

"We lost a survey crew through the Held Door in the spring. What holds it now wears their issue and knows our procedures. The Meridian does not leave its equipment in the field."

When the job is done, she has more to say than the ledger allows:

"Then the captain is accounted for. I will write it as equipment recovered; the rest of it does not fit in a ledger column."

"There was a second entry on the gauge sheet and I have been initialling it as instrument error for a season. Nothing more to say about it than that."

The first time the reward piece is handed over:

"Take the Band; her crew earned the pattern and never wore it."

While the job is still on cooldown:

"The ledger says you have been through recently. Doors keep their own time; come back when yours has passed."
