QuestsThe Unbidden Door (Holtburg)

Edda Coleward is the Driftwarden of Holtburg - a candlemaker who found a door open in her market square that nobody had built, and now pays adventurers to keep whatever comes through it thinned.

Overview

Edda has made candles in the Holtburg square for eleven years and knows every stone of it. Six days before you meet her, a door opened where no door was; she threw a stone through it, and the stone did not come back. She cannot go in herself, so she pays those who can - in a Driftwarden's Mark, the shared token the four Driftwardens honor through the Driftwarden Provisioner.

Dialogue

On first speaking with her:

"I have made candles in this square for eleven years, and I know every stone of it. Six days ago a door opened where no door was. I threw a stone through it, and the stone did not come back."
"The Pathwarden calls it a portal, and says the word as though the word were an answer. A portal is a thing a person makes. Nobody made this one."
"Go through, and bring me back a token from whatever leads them. I will give you a Mark for it. It is not coin, it is a promise, and the four of us have agreed to honor it."

On bringing back the boss token:

"Then it can be killed. That is the first good thing anyone has said to me in six days. Take the Mark to the provisioner, and if you have the stomach for it, there are three more doors in Shoushi and Yaraq and Sanamar, and each hides something different behind it."
