Glasswright Rin Kuroda is a Sho glasswright who stands the sixth bay of Assay Row's west wall. She teaches Obsidian: Convert and Reroll, the one irreversible bench on the whole ladder.
Overview
Rin is plain about what her craft costs. Obsidian does not add to a piece the way the earlier benches do - it breaks down what a piece already rolled and remakes it as something else, with no way back. She warns of that trade in the same breath she warns about the shaft itself: the seams down there hold their heat.
Quest
Rin's bench only opens to a character who has already been taught Amethyst by Slotwright Yusra Tannim at the previous bay. Anyone who has not is turned away, with the correct bench named plainly and no Assay Pick handed out.
Once that prerequisite is met, Rin hands over an Assay Pick and asks for ten shards of Raw Obsidian Glass, mined from the Obsidian Seam formations inside Glass Shaft. Handing over ten shards - either by conversation once ten are in hand, or by offering them to her directly:
- teaches the player Obsidian, opening the Convert and Reroll bench;
- hands over an Obsidian Hammer, a working tool rather than the sealed, vendor-sale version of the same item.
The turn-in carries no experience, Trade Note, or Class Ability Point reward - only the teaching and the hammer itself. It is a one-time exchange: once the teaching is recorded, the bench cannot be re-taught on the same character, and Rin has nothing further to say about it.
This same turn-in is also what arms the Firecut fight further down the wall - completing Rin's teaching is what lets a character take credit for killing the two bosses Assay-Warden Vittorio Sarra guards at the capstone bay, so it is worth finishing even for a character not planning to use the Obsidian bench itself.
Dialogue
When the prerequisite is not yet met:
- "Not yet. The Glass Shaft answers to amethyst, and you have not read it. Slotwright Yusra Tannim holds that bench. Finish with her and the shaft will let you down; until then a pick from me is only weight."
Once it is met, on first arrival:
- "Obsidian does not improve a piece. It breaks what the piece was born with and makes something else out of the fragments, and there is no putting it back. Bring me gear that rolled ratings and I will show you the trade."
- "Mind the seams once you are down there. A face just cut holds its heat, and standing at one to swing costs you skin the longer you linger - step back if it starts to bite."
Before ten shards are in hand:
- "Not ten yet. Go back to the seams - and mind the heat, it does not cool as fast as you would like."
Handing over ten shards:
- "Ten shards, and every one earned at a hot seam. Here is what obsidian makes of gear that already rolled its ratings - and here is the trade I promised for the walk down."
Once the teaching is already done:
- "You have the hammer. The bench has nothing else obsidian owes you."
