Matron of the Long Breath is the source of the brood pulsing out of Breathing Door, and the thing that keeps the door breathing at all.
Overview
The Matron waits at the centre of the pit at the bottom of Breathing Door's descent, and she does not rise on her own - only the third working of the Spiracle Node brings her up, flanked by Drift-Touched Olthoi Soldiers still coming through her own breach. She is built to outlast every creature in her own brood: bigger and tougher than the Drones and Soldiers pulsing through the doors around her, gold across her carapace with her natural violet wing-membranes left untouched underneath the gold.
Like every Olthoi, the Matron never speaks. After so many talking encounters in the wing, a mute one lands harder - her only voice is the endless brood breathing around her, pulse after pulse, for as long as the door stands.
In battle
The Matron fights as she is found: silent, tanky, escorted. She carries no dialogue of her own, and nothing about the fight changes once she rises - what changes is that the door has stopped merely leaking and started sending its worst.
If she is put down, the arena needs a little time to recover before the Spiracle Node can bring her up again - about ten minutes, longer than any of the wave pulls before her.
Access
The Matron is fought at the centre of the pit in Breathing Door, reached only after working the Spiracle Node three times. Vent-Warden Callum Dreese sets the job that sends contractors down after her.
